Summer Festival with Heinrich Kürtelkämper

21 June around PHOENIX Halle

Readings, music, puppet theatre and the HMKV exhibition “Awake Are Only the Spirits”

The “good spirits” will be awakened on 21 June (Sunday) at the PHOENIX-West site. From 3 pm to 8 pm, a large summer festival will take place around PHOENIX Halle, Hochofenstraße / corner of Rombergstraße, Dortmund-Hörde. District Mayor Manfred Renno will officially open the festivities.

The good spirits will be brought to life through stories by Heinrich Kürtelkämper, an original character from the era of the German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder), presented by Hörde-based author Gabriele Krause-Herrmann. The Harmonie Hörde Men’s Choir promises an entertaining afternoon of music, while local historian Willi Garth will revive the legendary Hörde castle ghost. The puppet theatre “Floh im Ohr” will enchant visitors with mysterious stories, and the ZWAR Hörde painting group will present their works. Further music and dancing will be provided by the traditional orchestra of the Bandoneon Friends Essen.

Children from the St. Clara Catholic Kindergarten will also bring little ghosts to life by making them float and singing ghost songs. The garden department of the Catholic cemetery will donate a small tree in memory of the “spirits of the departed” – especially the Hörde town poet Wilhelm Wenzel, who is buried at the cemetery.

Of course, refreshments will also be provided in the spirit of Heinrich Kürtelkämper: the Winterberg/Sommerberg Residents’ Association and Feldkamp Bakery will serve coffee, cake, sausages and drinks to festival visitors.

A guided tour through the exhibition “Awake Are Only the Spirits – On Ghosts and Their Media” with Heinrich Kürtelkämper will also be offered. The exhibition is presented by the Hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund (HMKV) at PHOENIX Halle Dortmund until 18 October 2009.

“On this day, not only the good spirit of Phoenix will appear,” promise the organisers Susanne Ackers (HMKV) and Gabriele Krause-Herrmann. “We are celebrating a colourful summer festival for the whole family. A dialogue between music, painting and media art will emerge – with Heinrich Kürtelkämper acting as the mediator.”

The event is supported by the Hörde District Marketing initiative.

PHOENIX Halle in Dortmund-Hörde was formerly a spare-parts warehouse of a steelworks. Today, it provides a large exhibition space for media-based art projects organised by the Hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund.
