To mark the 60th anniversary of the ‘silent piece’ 4'33'', the HMKV is organising a concert featuring works by John Cage.

4'33'' in Concert – Echoes Of Indetermined Actions

During his first stay in Cologne in 1954, John Cage left a lasting mark. His ‘indeterminate’ compositional techniques, based on Zen Buddhism and the I Ching, influenced generations of composers and musicians. The five musicians of Echoes Of Indetermined Actions can also be regarded as representatives of this movement. Key aspects include the liberation of music from sheet music and the ensemble – and the dismantling of social hierarchies in favour of the musicians’ individual responsibility.

For the concert at the Hartware MedienKunstVerein as part of the exhibition ‘Sounds like Silence’, the five musicians will perform 4’33”, the piano sonata about silence, alongside compositions for small ensembles from all periods of John Cage’s career.

The musicians of the ensemble are trained as instrumentalists and composers in new music and jazz, and work within the contexts of contemporary modernism, media art and as visual artists.

Williams Mix – John Cage (1952) 
Williams Mix Extended for eight-channel digital audio (2011) – Werner Dafeldecker and Valerio Tricoli

John Cage’s Williams Mix is one of the key works of early tape music. Based on the 192-page score, the composers and musicians Werner Dafeldecker and Valerio Tricoli created a new interpretation of the piece in 2010. In their digitally produced version, they stretch the timeline by a factor of eight and collage and transform the sounds recorded in New York in accordance with the score.
The artist Werner Dafeldecker explores musical graphics, Fluxus, minimal music, electroacoustic music and field recordings. His projects are inspired by influences such as architecture, physics, photography and film. Valerio Tricoli is a composer, producer, curator and artist specialising in sound installations. He explores the relationships between musicians, sound and objects.
