HMKV is now Kunsthalle Dortmund

In its anniversary year 2026, HMKV Hartware MedienKunstVerein is opening a new chapter after 30 years of institutional history: the exhibition venue is becoming Kunsthalle Dortmund.

The new name reflects the institution’s development: what began in 1996 as an initiative dedicated to media art has grown into an internationally renowned art institution over the past three decades. The name Kunsthalle Dortmund makes the institution’s profile more immediately recognisable: a place for international contemporary art in Dortmund with a particular focus on media art.

At the same time, everything essential remains unchanged: Hartware MedienKunstVerein e. V. will continue to be the institution’s legal body. Exhibitions will continue to take place at the Dortmunder U on Level 3 and Level 6. The programme of exhibitions, events, and educational offerings will continue – as will free admission to Level 3.

For 30 years, HMKV has brought artistic positions to Dortmund that engage with the social, political, and technological questions of our present. Through its programme, HMKV has actively contributed to shaping the development of media art in Germany and beyond, repeatedly presenting artistic positions that were ahead of their time. This connection between art, technology, and social reflection will continue to define the work of Kunsthalle Dortmund in the future.

Alles wie immer. Alles neu. Welcome to Kunsthalle Dortmund.
