Thomas Köner. PNEUMA MONOXYD

Thomas Köner. PNEUMA MONOXYD is an exhibition project by the Dortmunder Kunstverein and hartware medien kunst verein in cooperation with RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems, the Museum Bochum and the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl.

For the first time, video and sound installations by the media artist Thomas Köner (*1965 in Bochum, lives and works in Dortmund) are presented in a “distributed solo exhibition” across several venues. In Köner’s installations, sound and image references intersect, drawing on found material from the urban everyday environment. Through images, the artist creates a sense of spatial vastness and emptiness usually associated with sound, while the sound itself becomes almost physically tangible through its intensity. Together, image and sound evoke encounters with people, traces of human presence, and moments of disappearance that remain elusive yet deeply perceptible.

As a musician, Thomas Köner has contributed to more than 70 CD productions since 1990. His video works have received numerous international awards, including the Golden Nica at Ars Electronica Linz (2004) and the Transmediale Award Berlin (2005).

Thomas Köner

Born in 1965 in Bochum, Thomas Köner studied electronic music at the CEM Studio in Arnhem, Netherlands (1985–1990) and at the Dortmund Conservatory of Music (1987–1992). Since 1995, he has worked as an independent artist.

Köner has received numerous awards, including the ARCO Award for Best Young Artist at ARCO, Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo, Madrid (2005), the Transmediale.05 Award at the International Media Art Festival Berlin (2005), and the Golden Nica, Prix Ars Electronica, Linz (2004).
