The 1990s were decisively shaped by the popularisation of the Internet – understood both as its broad appropriation by society and as a process of commercialisation and increasing control. This development was accompanied by the emergence of numerous decentralised spaces of action for a critical, networked (also digitally connected), multidisciplinary production of culture and knowledge. Their “analogue” predecessors can be traced back to the 1960s.

The concept of “open source” was – and continues to be – explored on many levels as a mode of action and a model for collaborative practice.

The workshop focuses on initiatives and “communities” that emerged in the 1990s against this background within the broad field of media arts. It aims equally at revisiting their respective “founding phases” and discussing processes of transformation as well as their current situations.
