PhoenixDREAM is a photography project for young people that has taken place annually since 2008, each edition focusing on a different aspect of structural change in the Ruhr region. The third edition aims to foster a deeper understanding of the region's transformation, exploring topics such as the end of the coal and steel era, the emergence of new forms of employment, social change, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Emscher Park, the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, and the Ruhr region's place within a broader European context.

Working with two groups of students from Dortmund-Hörde and Unna, participants visited key sites of urban transformation and produced photographic reportages on location. These included Phoenix Lake and the Phoenix-West site in Dortmund-Hörde, the Dortmunder U and the Rheinische Straße district in Dortmund's city centre, as well as the former state facility at Unna-Massen.

The resulting works will be presented in an exhibition on Thursday, 4 November 2010. The project is also documented in a printed publication, while the website www.phoenix-traum.de brings together all three editions of PhoenixDREAM. Visitors can also download the publications from the first two project phases there.
