Finissage of the project – initiated and curated by Dagmar Lippok (Hagen)
17 June 2006, 6 pm–2 am
“There is a sense of dizziness in the air. Times are hard. The market is war.”
An art project in the public spaces of the cities of Dortmund, Cologne and Gelsenkirchen
Video art, objects, digital art, photography and editions by eleven artists were offered in the immediate vicinity of the 2006 FIFA World Cup matches and positioned in dialogue with the usual commercial stalls and market stands.
During the Thirty Years’ War, marketenders were merchants who followed armies in large entourages alongside other civilian service providers. Many of them were women who sold food and equipment to soldiers at inflated prices – and some even sold themselves.
“Marketenderin” gives football fans the opportunity to encounter existential themes through a sales performance conceived as an artistic intervention. Friendly hostesses will be on hand to offer advice.
The art project began with its integration into the “Stadion am Bahnhof” in Dortmund, officially opened by Franz Beckenbauer on 2 June. Paola Anziché presented her performance “Chinoiserie” at the railway station.
From 10 June onwards, Marketenderin appeared successively at the three World Cup host cities Dortmund, Cologne and Gelsenkirchen in the run-up to the matches.
On 10 June, at the “Stadion am Bahnhof” (Dortmund), on the artificial turf area and in front of the theatre square as part of “Freundschaftsspiel” before the Trinidad and Tobago–Sweden match. Around 30,000 Swedish fans saw Marketenderin on their way to the stadium.
On 14 June, the Marketenderin cart was located at Roncalliplatz in Cologne, offering art to World Cup visitors (1–8 pm). The staging was part of the FIFA Fan Fest 2006, taking place before the Germany–Poland match.
In Gelsenkirchen, the ensemble could be found at the station forecourt (10 am–3 pm) before the Argentina–Serbia and Montenegro match (16 June). The New York-based artist Klara Hobza presented a flag performance at both World Cup locations.
On 17 June in Dortmund:
Finissage with video documentation and performance in front of PHOENIX Halle as part of “Extraschicht”. At PHOENIX Halle, the Hartware MedienKunstVerein presented the international exhibition “Glanz und Globalisierung. Fussball, Medien und Kunst” (“Glamour and Globalisation. Football, Media and Art”) until 16 July 2006.
