The Austrian artist Evamaria Trischak uses the geographic coordinate system as the starting point for developing a unique psychogeographic experience of Dortmund.
Dortmund is located at 51° north of the equator and 07° east of Greenwich, the so-called prime meridian. This means that all GPS coordinates in Dortmund begin with the designation N 51° E 07°. The title of the workshop, 5107, refers to these coordinates.
The workshop focuses on the precise minute intersections of the GPS grid within the urban area of Dortmund. These points are approximately 1.9 km apart on the north–south axis and around 1 km apart on the east–west axis.
The aim of the workshop is to locate these places using GPS devices and document them photographically. For the 5107 project, four photographs are required for each point – one in each cardinal direction.
By navigating to a GPS minute intersection, participants embark on an expedition through Dortmund – away from historically developed street networks. Dortmund becomes an expedition site, an object of measurement, a playground and an abstract matrix.
Through a precise registration and implementation strategy, the workshop encourages a systematic and conceptual exploration of Dortmund’s urban space.
