Manga drawing: In the Manga Café, located in the exhibition space of the Japan Media Arts Festival, manga artist Karin Nagao will be teaching interested visitors everything they need to know about drawing techniques, character development and story creation in an open studio from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm. No advance booking is required.

Screening of Japanese anime short films

LED Throwie activity: Visitors can leave glowing messages using LED Throwies on magnetic objects and the surrounding construction hoardings. Short clips will show LED Throwie activities from around the world.


The current HMKV exhibitions reflect a thematic focus at the Dortmunder U, which explores Japanese culture and its outstanding artistic representatives. This is set against the backdrop of the 150-year friendship between Japan and Germany. The exhibition *Proto Anime Cut – Spaces and Visions in Japanese Animation* showcases original drawings by the most important directors and illustrators of Japanese animated films. The Japan Media Arts Festival Dortmund 2011 presents works of contemporary and popular Japanese culture from the fields of media art, entertainment, anime and manga.
